Labor Day Parade, Rally & Picnic

"20 Years of Fighting for All"

in Ishpeming, Monday Sept. 7th @ 11am


This Year's Labor Day Parade, Rally and Picnic are at the Cliffs Shaft Museum (Marquette Range Iron Mining Heritage Theme Park) near Lake Bancroft in Ishpeming on September 7th. The red star on the map.

The Parade
Parade set up is at 9 am. The parade starts at 11am. The parade starts and ends at the Cliff’s Shaft Museum and goes from Euclid to Main to Division and then comes back to the museum via Lakeshore Drive. The red line on the map. Total length is 1.1 miles.

The theme for this year is "20 Years of Fighting for All".  This year's parade marshal is Rich Brown, current Clerk for the Michigan House of Representatives and former State Representative of the 110th district. We encourage Local Unions to march and enter floats in the parade that reflect this theme.  Please contact Russ Williams at (906) 475-9518 for details and to confirm your participation. Parade line up will be based upon the order in which Locals respond, so please respond early!
 

The Picnic & Rally The picnic & rally run from 12 – 4. The rally will include music by Fast Eddies Blues Band, speeches from elected officials and candidates, along with children’s activities. Once again we will have available a picnic lunch, the cost of lunch tickets will remain at $4.00. The picnic lunch includes a pasty or hot dogs, pop and dessert. Tickets for adult beverages ($2.00), pop and water ($1.00 each) will be available.

Museum Tours
Cliff's Shaft Mine Museum preserves the historic Cliff's Shaft Mine and exhibits mining archives, maps, photographs, and equipment. It also houses the collections of the Ishpeming Rock and Mineral Club and the Ishpeming Historical Society. The museum volunteers will again be providing free tours (donations will be accepted) from 12 – 2. In addition a huge dump truck from the mines is available on the grounds. Transportation and Directions from Marquette and Negaunee
Head west on US 41 past the US Ski Hall of Fame on the left and Pamida on the right. Turn left at the stop light to get on Lakeshore Drive. Parking is available at the Cliff's Shaft and Elks Lodge, 597 Lake Shore Dr, across the street from Cliffs Shaft Museum.

MarqTran will be providing transportation to and from Ishpeming from both Marquette (JC Penney Mall parking lot) and Negaunee (Lakeview School parking lot).  The scheduled times are as follows:

 

JC Penney Westwood Mall        9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

 

Lakeview School                         9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

 

Cliffs Shaft                                  12:00, 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00 p.m.    

 

 

This event has become very costly to the Labor Council and is very labor intensive, so we are requesting that all affiliates and participants contribute as follows:

 

1. Make a cash donation to the Labor Council to help defray the cost. Donations may be sent in care of the Marquette County Labor Council, 31 Forge Road, Negaunee, MI 49866. Unaffiliated locals are encouraged to PLEASE make a donation or at least $1.00 per member.

 

2. Purchase food/beverage tickets at the ticket tent before the Parade begins.

 

3. Recruit volunteer workers for the day of the event. Please fax a list of volunteers (names and phone numbers) to the attention of Mike Thibault at 346-9361 or email to mt1149@charter.net.

 

4. Participate in the planning meetings or give feedback to the Committee on ways to improve the event.

 

Locals are asked to PLEASE encourage everyone to pitch in so all who attend can enjoy the day!
